While the science to convert sunlight directly into electricity has been around for decades, in recent years both the technology and economics have improved and systems are becoming mainstream. Solar is now cost competitive with conventional energy — without contributing to pollution or global warming.

How does Solar work?

Solar panels are made up of solar cells that convert sunlight to electricity. When particles of sunlight known as photons hit a roof’s solar panels, the solar panels convert the photons into electrons of Direct Current electricity. The electrons flow out of the solar panel and into an inverter which converts the DC power into Alternating Current power. AC power is the electricity that powers your television, computer or toaster when they are plugged into a wall outlet.

How durable is a solar power system?

Solar panels have a relatively simple design: an array of enclosed panel of photovoltaic cells with a frame around the edge. Since they do not have delicate moving parts, solar panels are durable and reliable.

Most solar energy systems come with a warranty of at least 10 years. However, barring an accident, solar panels can last 20 to 30 years or more with simple cleaning and maintenance. Most solar panels are built to withstand even the most extreme weather conditions.

Most problems with a solar panel system occur because of poor installation. The best way to ensure and extend the life and effectiveness of your PV system is by having it installed and maintained properly.
